I believe that everyone should have a choice as to how they live their lives. We are all different and we all have different beliefs and priorities. I am personally vegan and do not push it upon anyone. With that said, we should all be properly informed before making our decisions. No one made me go vegan, I simply heard the facts, researched a lot and made the choice not to cause suffering anymore. I used to think that my choices didn't matter; that they didn't make a difference in the big scheme of things. I was incredibly misinformed. If you think that eating animals only affects you, then you are wrong. If you think that you can't make a difference in this world, then again, you are wrong. We can make a huge difference, whether it be positive or negative.
How Factory Farms Affect the Planet
More than half of the water used in the United States today goes to animal agriculture, and since farmed animals produce 130 times more excrement than the human population, the run-off from their waste is polluting our waterways.
Forests are being bulldozed to make more room for factory farms and feed crops to feed farmed animals, and this destruction causes soil erosion and contributes to species extinction and habitat loss. Raising animals for food also requires massive amounts of food and raw materials: Farmed animals consume 70 percent of the corn, wheat, and other grains that we grow. (and we have starving humans). If we grew more vegetables and grains to feed humans directly, we could fix the world hunger crisis. In short, our country's meat addiction is wrecking the earth. This affects us all!!!
How Factory Farms affect the Animals
IF SLAUGHTERHOUSES HAD GLASS WALLS, WE WOULD ALL BE VEGETARIANS!
I believe this is true! Slaughterhouses and factory farms are scary, sad places. Animals are inprisoned, never seeing the light of day, never feeling fresh air or grass. They live horrible lives and then are murdered for human consumption. Not only is that sad, it is not healthy or safe for human consumption. Outbreaks of mad cow disease and meat recalls are rampid. Today's farms are mechanized factories where an animal's welfare is of little concern compared to profit. Human health and safety is also of little concern. Dead and dying animals are kept in the same cages or areas as live animals. Sick animals are given more antibiotics and toxins. Farms are looking for the cheapest, fastest way to process animals into food. Does that sound like something you want to support? Does it sound safe? Meat eaters take a huge risk with each bite.
For Your Health!
The consumption of animal fats and proteins has been linked to heart disease, colon and lung cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, obesity, and a number of other debilitating conditions. Cows' milk contains ideal amounts of fat and protein for young calves, but far too much for humans. And eggs are higher in cholesterol than any other food, making them a leading contributor to cardiovascular disease. The American Dietetic Association reports that vegetarian/vegan diets are associated with reduced risks for all of these conditions. The more sickness Americans cause, the more we all spend on health care. The prescription companies are maximizing on the American meat diet. We can counteract it. Go vegan!
There is a connection to eating meat and how you live. Our society lives in fear (fear of failure, fear of loss, fear of death, etc), diseases are on a rise, war is active, prisons are full and much more. Why? What do these animals go through? They are in prison, unhealthy and murdered by the second. Humans are eating fear daily and ...if you are what you eat then....... make the connection!!!
Last night I made Gav pumpkin pancakes from Trader's for his dinner. He asked for a glass of milk and I told him that I don't buy milk anymore. And he said 'but cows make milk so kids can drink it.' And I told him 'no, cows make milk so baby cows can drink it, and after they are older they only drink water, so you aren't a baby anymore, so you can drink water now.' And he got it. Well... probably until breakfast at his school where he'll get a big glass of milk with his breakfast there. But you are absolutely right... I think people just don't have the facts or do what they do simply because it's what they have always done.
ReplyDeleteCool! Great parenting! He is already making the connections!
