Vegan Diet

Herbivore V. Carnivore

A healthy vegetarian diet supports a lifetime of good health and provides protection against numerous diseases, including our country’s three biggest killers: heart disease, cancer, and strokes. The key words are “Healthy Vegetarian diet”. The American Dietetic Association states that vegetarians have “lower rates of death from ischemic heart disease; … lower blood cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and lower rates of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and prostate and colon cancer” and that vegetarians are less likely than meat-eaters to be obese. Well-planned vegetarian diets provide us with all the nutrients that we need, minus all the saturated fat, cholesterol, and contaminants found in animal flesh, eggs, and dairy products.

Research has shown that vegetarians are 50 percent less likely to develop heart disease, and they have 40 percent of the cancer rate of meat-eaters. Plus, meat-eaters are nine times more likely to be obese than vegans are.The consumption of meat, eggs, and dairy products has also been strongly linked to osteoporosis, Alzheimer's, asthma, and male impotence. Scientists have also found that vegetarians have stronger immune systems than their meat-eaters; this means that they are less susceptible to everyday illnesses like the flu. Vegetarians and vegans live, on average, six to 10 years longer than meat-eaters.

Vegetarian and Vegan diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes.

Just some advantages to a Vegetarian Diet: -Lower Cholesterol levels
-Lower risk of Heart Disease
-Lower blood pressure levels
-Lower risk of hypertension
-Lower risk of Type 2 diabetes
-Lower BMI
-Lower risks of many cancers

Do I need to say more? The above tend to be lower due to the lower saturated fat and cholesterol taken in by the diet. Vegs eat higher fiber, magnesium, potassium and vitamin C. Vegans also take in a lot less chemicals, antibiotics and toxins.

FYI: Cows, for example, live in horrible conditions. They are fed antibiotics to ward off infections due to the filth they live in. (sound appetizing yet?). They are fed corn and other animal by products because it is cheaper and fattens them up faster. (they are meant to eat grass. This causes unsafe gasses and high accidity created in their bodies). Before being killed, the animal releases adrenaline (every being knows fear) and that is released all in the body! Now, the cow is dead and cut up and bought and cooked and eaten. Wow...that is a lot of toxins on top of the animals fat and cholestrol one is ingesting.

FYI: Fish are no better. Fish that are found in the ocean have high levels of toxins. Look at this most recent oil spill or the trash and chemicals that are dumped in our waters daily. A small fish eats toxic chemicals, a bigger fish eats that fish, then a Salmon eats that fish. We catch the Salmon, kill it, cook it and eat it. Again, toxins being ingested. Fish that are farm raised are given antibiotics and growth hormones as well.

There is not doubt in my mind that a diet free of living beings and full of organic veggies and grains is the healthiest way to be. I have maintained a healthy weight, healthy blood levels (vitamins, minerals) and am stronger than ever! Give it a try. Give up meat for 2 weeks. See how you feel. It really is a liberating way to be!!!

  1. For sure, Mary you look awesome!
The amount of energy you can have when eating 'clean' and w/ out meat/dairy is amazing. I sometimes fool myself and think I will still have the same energy if I eat bad for me stuff. Then i eat it, feel like crap, nap all the time and wonder if it was worth it. Never was.

PS we had our weigh-in for biggest loser today and since January I've lost 23.4 lbs! Everyone always asks if I'm doing weight watchers, counting points or calories... I just say I gave up meat/dairy and don't have to worry about any of it anymore :)
Thanks sooo much for all your help/advice on going veg!

  5. Hi Mary's friend Beth! (or Mary, you can fwd this to her if she didn't follow this thread)I was honestly scared about the whole veggie thing for that reason... like do you turn into a carb freak to feel full? And if you eat dairy, you can actually gain weight on breads/cheeses going veggie. But when you eat raw vegetables/fruits your body gets really full really fast. This is because your blood sugar doesn't spike like it does getting the 'empty calories.' There are a ton of great books about going veggie that really break it down. I read the book "The Kind Diet" by alicia silverstone and that changed my mind. A lot of people like "Skinny Bitch." I follow what they say 100%. For me, that is the best concept (taken directly from the "fit for life" book series by Harvy Diamond).
